Thank you for writing us. You have asked us a question about the Canadian flag.
We have a fairly young Canadian flag. It was adopted from a military design in 1965 by the Prime Minister at the time, Lester B. Pearson. He had started a debate among parliamentarians and the Canadian people, urging them to let go of the British flag and show our pride as a country that could stand on its own. The Monarch of Britain was really only a figurehead for Canada, as we had our own Parliament and Governor General. The Queen did not preside over the governing of the country, even though she could be a final authority in extreme circumstances.
So the flag got adopted and Canada became known as the country with the red maple leaf. We still have a flag day on February 15th.
We don’t know why everything has to be based on military and power. There used to be a coin used by Native tribes and the “discoverers” of the country that showed two men shaking hands. It’s too bad those deals didn’t turn out to be what they were depicted to be. They were phony deals.
It’s the same as the flag today. It shows that we are beautiful, free, strong and vibrant. There is so much protocol around the flag and what you can’t do with it, or how and where it should fly. It often gets more attention than the people it is supposed to represent.
If it was really true that we are a nation of free, strong and vibrant Canadians, then our flag would be a true emblem of reality. As it is now, in Canada, there are more poor, more unhappy, more unemployed, more unloved and more hopeless people than ever before. What flag should we have to symbolize all of this?
We believe that all Canadians are beautiful. We believe that they should not ever have to suffer indignities or unhappiness. When we respect each other, care for each other and work together, as twins for the benefit of all, we will have a new country – not just a new flag – that will represent a nation that will cause all others to be in awe of it.
It is not a dream … it is totally possible and it will happen, because there are so many of us who truly want this to happen … no more war – peace everywhere, all people working, respect existing between everyone – no poverty … great happiness among all who live and work together in a Canada where all dreams will come true.
Start thinking of a new design for the new flag of the new Canada. How beautiful it will be.
Write to us again, anytime.
Sincerely,
