Integration of native people into our society is simply a question of love, like the kind between brothers or sisters.
We know that the reserve system was developed along lines similar to the segregated systems in South Africa…the compounds. Treaty promises were to be honoured only if Native people were identified and contained on the Reserves. Residential schools attempted to erase the qualities of Native people, while keeping them on Reserves. Still, the major part of the treaties has not been honoured, which is the part relating to land settlements. Native people, (whose country this was), are in a state of confusion and despair over broken promises. Hopelessness is a normal feeling for them.
The treaties must be honoured. A country that is being run on an unpaid contract is a country that is being run illegally. The reserve system does not need to exist if Native people have the same rights as the rest of Canadians. But first, be paid what they are owed and have the same equalities. This is not just a matter of money. It is a matter of healing, of having respect returned to them. We will finally be together. Native people need to have the same opportunities as all Canadians – to be happy, to have meaningful work, to contribute to their communities, to lead their country.
As every Canadian, each Native person must have the same freedoms:
To put it simply, when two people marry, even if they are of different races or beliefs, they marry because they love each other. The love is more powerful than a religion, and can’t keep them apart. Happiness and respect is the result of such a union.
